The Belgian Hare was developed in the early 18th century and has an extensive history to go along with this magnificent breed. They went from being one of the most well known rabbit breeds to now being considered threatened. While this breed faces many challenges when it comes to breeding and raising, nothing is more magical than the hare. They are a full arched breed weighing between 6 and 9.5lbs with 8-8.5lbs being an ideal weight for a hare. They are now, not only recognized in the rufus variety but, tan as well. The hare is to have a wild, alert look about it and stand tall on its toes while exhibiting a beautiful full arch shape.
Here at Miracle Rabbits Rabbitry, we are focused on raising rufus and self colored hares. Our rufus hares range between $100 and $200 while our self hares range between $100 and $300. If you are looking for a Belgian Hare, please feel free to send us an email stating what you are interested in and what, if any Hare experience you have. We are very selective about the homes our Belgian Hares go to and have the right to refuse a sale at any time. It is advised that you give your hare has a solid bottomed cage that is at least 4ft long, 2ft wide and 2ft tall and look for a good, quality pellet and hay to feed your hare. Here at the rabbitry, we feed Kent Show Hutch Deluxe Extruded 17% protein pellet, the pellet is small and round in shape to help reduce fines and to help prevent choking. This formula also has added papaya to help prevent wool block and promote good gut and coat health. As for hay, we feed a nice, fresh timothy hay, orchard grass, oat hay or meadow grass hay. We give alfalfa to our pregnant and nursing does as it has additional calcium to help encourage healthy milk production, it is also given to rabbits under six months of age to help encourage healthy bone formation and growth. When conducting breed research, we found an article discussing the introduction of salt on a regular basis, we have found that hares tend to maintain a better flesh condition when given an additional salt and/or mineral in their cage.
